El Reno is a city with deep roots in Oklahoma's frontier past. Just west of town on Route 66 sits Historic Fort Reno, established in 1875 to protect Cheyenne and Arapaho reservation lands. During World War II, the fort served as a prisoner-of-war camp housing German and Italian prisoners — the fort's church was actually built by soldiers from Rommel's Afrika Korps. Today Fort Reno is open to visitors and features artifacts, photographs, Buffalo Soldier exhibits, and a POW cemetery.
El Reno is also famous as the birthplace of the fried onion burger — a Depression-era invention that smashes thinly fried onions into a beef patty on the grill. Local institutions like Sid's Diner, Robert's Grill, and Johnnie's Hamburgers & Coneys have been serving them for generations. Every first Saturday in May, El Reno cooks the World's Largest Fried Onion Hamburger — a 750-pound burger — drawing crowds from across the state. El Reno also operates the Heritage Express Trolley, one of Oklahoma's last rail-based streetcar services.
